Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution (EDGE) is a higher bandwidth version of GPRS which will boost transmission speeds up to 384kbps. EDGE also marks a development of the GSM standard and permits migration from GPRS to UMTS through necessary modulation changes.

HSCSD (High Speed Circuit Switched Data) is a circuit switched protocol based on GSM. Using four radio channels simultaneously, it can transmit data at 57kbps. The typical device used with HSCSD is a handheld PC rather than a smartphone and is modem-based. As an interim technology without the higher data rate and instant connectivity of GPRS it is likely to be superseded by GPRS.
